Chargeback fraud

Chargeback fraud is when a buyer disputes a legitimate card payment to reclaim the money while keeping the product — in affiliate programs it is doubly costly, because the merchant may have already paid a commission on the reversed revenue.

Also called friendly fraud when the buyer is a genuine customer abusing the dispute process, it leaves the merchant with the lost sale, a dispute fee, and — in a commission model — an affiliate payout on revenue that never stayed. Clawbacks recover the commission only if the platform ties commissions to billing events.

Chargeback offenders tend to repeat across merchants, using a different email address each time. Detection therefore leans on durable signals like the card fingerprint, and on distinguishing disputes that are merely opened from disputes that are actually lost.

affixo claws back commissions automatically when a chargeback lands, and its cross-program Buyer Risk List flags a buyer who lost a dispute at one program the moment they purchase through any other — advisory-only, matched on hashed signals.
